Today, we’ll take a closer look at custom parameters. Setting custom parameters in Atlas allows you to dynamically insert customized values in your click-through URLs, or add additional code* for vendors. You can implement custom parameters at different levels of your media plan, including the campaign, ad, cost package, creative concept, and placement tiers. And you can even generate reports on your custom parameters via Atlas reporting.
How do custom parameters work in Atlas? Atlas gives you the flexibility to insert predefined standard parameters — also known as “macros” — in your click-through URLs or additional code for vendors. Examples include the ID or name for any object in your campaign, such as ad ID or ad name.
However, if you have your own custom values, you can use custom parameters, which are like user-defined macros, instead.
Let’s go over an example of how you can create a custom parameter at the placement level of your media plan to help drive this concept home. You can then use the parameter you’ve created across your entire campaign.
Imagine you have a set of click-through URLs that vary by country — for example, https://atlassolutions.com/UK and https://atlassolutions.com/US. Manually keeping track of more than one URL doesn’t scale, and matching the right URL with the right placement can be a tedious ad operations exercise. To simplify your workload, you can use Atlas custom parameters and create a single URL by dynamically inserting a “country code” into your click-through URLs:
1. First, create a custom parameter key for Country for each of your Placements by inserting the correct country code as the custom parameter value. You can do this one-by-one or in bulk via the Atlas import tool:
3. It’s that easy. Now you can create all your ads with this single URL, and assign them across your placements without having to worry about matching each individual URL with its placement. Once this is completed, you can review your media plan prior to trafficking via the Review button. You’ll notice that the URL contains the custom parameter value as defined in your placements:
